One among them which became a proof of concept is Barack Obama’s 2008 campaign. Obama built his relationships with voter through social media platforms. He developed an upfront and personal quality which got him the supporter’s trust, build a sense of security and which inspired them to follow him through his candidature and guarantee him a win.

In 2014, Narendra Modi changed the face of Indian campaigning by taking it from the streets to social media platforms. He hired political strategist, Prashant Kishor to tend to his campaign. He and his team collected and analyzed large amount of data about different demographics of people.

They collected information regarding the number of internet, social media and smartphone users in all the 543 constituencies. Apart from this they implemented analytics to know the polling results for every few days. They targeted 810 million voters in 543 constituencies and 1.13 million polling booths.

Modi heavily used social media to advance his agenda among the citizens of India. Social media also gave him an advantage over his competitors. His competitors realized their mistake at a very later time. Internet and social media helped him bring together volunteers in to a corner to follow him until his win.

Several other situations in the campaigns recently formed, has given rise to social media usage in much bigger forms.

Whether it may be Arvind kejriwal, Narendra Modi, Barack Obama or Donald Trump, all of them might not have succeed in the election or at least would have not reach the stage they are without the help of internet and social media platforms.

Internet has revolutionized the world with its power and it will not be wrong to say that the future of campaigns may largely be based on the social media interactions of the political parties to gain support and volunteers from the public.
